Porcelain Crowns in
San Diego

If your tooth is heavily damaged from decay or trauma, it needs a restoration that can protect and support it. Why not get one that is beautiful as well? Porcelain crowns can be used when a tooth is damaged or weakened. They will allow the tooth to continue functioning for years or even decades. And they look good doing it, too. With recent technological advances, you won’t have to have metal in your smile—and you won’t have to wait for your smile or wear a temporary crown, either.

What Porcelain Crowns Can Do

Porcelain crowns are like a suit of armor for your tooth. They fit over the tooth, giving it support and protection. They also give it an entirely new surface, so that a tooth which has been turned dark by decay, injury, or old metal restorations will look beautiful again. We use a porcelain crown for:

  • Cracked tooth
  • Large filling that breaks or has decay around it
  • Tooth is worn down
  • Teeth can’t support bite
  • Protecting tooth after a root canal
  • The final touch on a dental implant
  • Cosmetic improvement

A porcelain crown turns a failing tooth back into a functioning tooth. An infected tooth is on the verge of needing extraction, but once it is treated with a root canal and capped with a porcelain crown, the tooth becomes part of the healthy, functioning team of teeth again, and it can last for decades.

The Look of Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns look more like your natural teeth than any other dental crown option. Your natural tooth enamel is essentially a ceramic produced by your body. Porcelain crowns can not only match the color of your teeth, but also the luster or surface quality of your teeth. Picking out a porcelain crown in your smile takes time and talent—you won’t need to worry about that.

The Toughness of Porcelain Crowns

The look is just part of the story of porcelain crowns. In the past, they were fragile and couldn’t be used in many places in your mouth—the bite forces were just too likely to damage them. But now advances in material science mean that porcelain crowns can be made to withstand bite pressures that only metal crowns could handle in the past. Even with a bad bite, you can still get all crowns.

The Convenience of Porcelain Crowns

And with our CEREC system, porcelain crowns come with another benefit: they can be made while you wait. In the past, dental crowns had to be manufactured in a lab, but CEREC allows us to use a CAD/CAM system to design your porcelain crown during your visit, then manufacture it while you’re waiting. We can then fit the crown, custom stain it, and polish it so you have a beautiful crown in just one visit. You won’t need to wear a temporary crown—along with the worry that the temporary will fail too soon—and you won’t need to come back for a second visit to have your crown fitted.
