The majority of Americans see a beautiful smile as an important personal asset, but if you have missing teeth, that asset is diminished. As a prosthetic and cosmetic dentist, our dentists here at Deluxe Dental help patients regain confidence through a complete, sensational smile. We offer three replacement teeth options: dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants.
This page helps you understand each of the replacement teeth options, but the best way to learn which one is right for you is to talk to us in person about the current state of your teeth and your oral health. To schedule an appointment with our doctor, please call (619) 377-8577 or email Deluxe Dental in San Diego.
Dentures are the least expensive tooth replacement option. Partial dentures are used to replace just one tooth or a few teeth. Full dentures are used when you need to replace a full arch of dentures, such as all your bottom teeth or all your top teeth. They can be attractive and may not be natural in appearance if designed and placed by an experienced prosthodontist here in Deluxe Dental.
Dentures are completely removable, which partly contributes to their main weakness: they can slip and move around when you’re talking, eating, or smiling. Partial dentures are secured by clasps and hooks to your existing teeth, which can lead to damage for those teeth. Full dentures are secured by their close fit to the jawbone and by suction, but this is often inadequate. Even dentures that fit well at first can lost their fit in a couple years. Without stimulation, your body will remove material from your jawbone, which will cause your dentures to slip out more often.
Dental bridges are sometimes described as “fixed dentures.” They are replacement teeth that are fused to one or two dental crowns that fit over the teeth that are next to the missing tooth. They can be made of highly aesthetic ceramic with no wires or other visible bracing.
Dental bridges solve the loose-fitting problem of partial dentures, but they still have some of the other problems of dentures. Dental bridges require us to remove material from the teeth next to the missing tooth, and any time we have to remove natural tooth material it weakens the tooth. If the teeth next to your missing tooth are damaged or decayed, this is okay, but otherwise, it’s not preferred. Dental bridges also don’t stimulate the jawbone, which can cause it to lose material and weaken. Dental bridges can normally only be used for one or two missing teeth.
Dental implants are the best replacement teeth because they are most like your natural tooth. They are made up of a titanium post that serves as an artificial tooth root—your bone grows around it and incorporates it—and a highly attractive ceramic crown.
Dental implants look and function just like your natural teeth. They require no special care or maintenance, don’t damage your neighboring teeth, and can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. Dental implants stimulate your jawbone, so you don’t lose it. Best of all, with proper care dental implants can last a lifetime—30 years or more—though you may have to replace the crown once or twice.
